Post-Partum Care

Isthmus Acupuncturists have a variety of techniques to provide post-partum care and promote a healthy recovery.  During the six weeks after birth the body is undergoing a tremendous amount of healing and given the right direction and added support the body can settle into a healthy patten of motherhood. We recommend one or two acupuncture sessions before six-weeks post-partum and one or two post-partum massages or CranioSacral Therapy after six-weeks. Acupuncture sessions will include dietary recommendations and discuss the possibility of specific strengthening and blood-building herbs.

Post-Partum Care with Chinese Herbalism

Two common formulas for treating various postpartum disorders and assisting women in their postpartum recovery is Sheng Hua Tang, and Xiong Gui Tiao Xue Yin. Both formulas are effective, and easily modified to treat a variety of post-partum situations. Breastfeeding formulas are commonly prepared to ensure a healthy milk supply. Chinese herbalists at Isthmus are trained to custom prepare your post-partum as needed.

Post-Partum Care with CranioSacral Therapy

Even the gentlest birth stresses the structures and tissues of a woman’s body. Cranio-Sacral therapy is especially adept at helping women rebalance and heal after giving birth. Cranio-Sacral therapy reduces discomfort and swelling by releasing post-partum and post surgical compressions, restrictions and adhesions. New mothers notice reduced structural imbalances, post-partum depression and improved recovery time. Cranio-Sacral therapy also helps new mothers cope better with sleep deprivation.

Cranio-Sacral therapy can help parents who are coping with the physical and emotional complications that accompany a traumatic birth. Cranio-Sacral therapy promotes physical healing and restores the nervous system by switching off physiological stress responses that get stuck on during overwhelmingly stressful events, thereby improving sleep and proper digestion, so necessary for restoring health and well-being.
