Interview with Jahna Cook

Jahna Cook is an acupuncturist and Certified Cupping Therapist. Jahna was kind enough to take time out of her busy schedule to answer a few questions about her background and what led her on the path to become a wellness practitioner.

Q: I have seen pictures of you doing yoga poses on paddle boards, what’s that all about?

A:
I was a gymnast growing up and yoga has been a natural progression for me as an adult. Combining yoga with my love of nature is a “win-win” activity for me! SUP yoga is a lot easier and more relaxing than people might think. If you haven’t tried it yet, I highly recommend it!

Q: Why did you become an acupuncturist?

A:
I have a tender spot in my heart for people – especially people in need. When I witnessed the healing power of acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), I knew it was my path. I love the fact that acupuncture and TCM addresses the body, mind and spirit. Treating the whole person is something that I’m very committed to. I have the honor to be on both the giving end and the receiving end of this incredible system as both as a practitioner and a patient.

Q: When did you realize that holistic medicine worked for you? Can you share a personal story?

A: In Traditional Chinese Medicine we’re always seeking to restore balance within the body, just as elements and systems in nature seeks balance. When elements and systems in nature don’t work in harmony, they get out of balance and cease to functioning well. One area where I’ve benefited from a holistic approach is managing my weight. In the past, I focused on my body without addressing my mind and spirit. Focusing solely on my body was totally unsuccessful. As I began to focus on the mind-body connection, I was able to start healing and transforming. I truly believe that it’s vital to take a holistic approach to achieve good health.

Q: If you had one superpower, what would it be and why?

A: I would love to fly! I grew up riding horses and loved galloping across the fields in the summer. I imagine that flying would have a similar feel. It would be amazing to be above the earth and see how connected we all really are to one another. You can get a sense of that joy through commercial air flight or viewing aerial photography, but involving all the senses; flying through the air with one’s own body and viewing the world through the unobstructed lenses of our own eyes, would be incredible!

Q: I understand that you do facial cupping as well. What is the most dramatic change you have ever had with a client after the cupping?

A: I received training in facial cupping while I was pursuing my masters in acupuncture and TCM. I decided to get advanced training in cupping because I saw how powerful it was.

One of the most powerful (most dramatic) experiences has been my work with Bell’s Palsy clients. Helping people recover from this affliction is extremely rewarding.

In general, treating clients for the first time is very satisfying – it’s one of my favorite experiences as a practitioner. Facial cupping is done in two parts; one for each side of the face. After I treat one side and before I start the other, I show my clients their reflection with a handheld mirror. It’s very exciting to watch their reaction when they see such a difference from their very first treatment!

Q: Can I book appointments with you online?

A: Yes! For your convenience, you can book appointments online through our website at www.isthmuswellness.com. Look for the link below on our home page or click the link right now to schedule your appointment today!
