Maya Abdominal Therapy History and Lineage
Maya abdominal therapy was developed by Dr. Rosita Arvigo and based on the teachings of Don Elijio Panti, who, when died at the age of 103, was recognized in his New York Times obituary as “the last Mayan master healer in Belize.” Dr. Arvigo studied naprapathy, the medical specialty of realigning the connective tissue, in Chicago before moving to Belize in the 1980’s to study directly under Don Elijio Panti. Using his techniques, Dr. Arvigo created Maya abdominal therapy in the early 1990s, and began teaching workshops in the United States and at her campsite in the jungle. In the first seminar, participants are taught the art of self-care, stressing that in order to heal others, one must first be able to treat and understand the dynamics within one’s own body. To become a Certified Maya Therapist, advanced weeklong training directly under Dr. Arvigo is required for each level of training.
